• Linux on ARMVia has introduced VAB-1000 Pico-ITX board at Embedded World 2014. This new embedded board features VIA Elite E1000 dual Cortex A9 SoC together with 2GB DDR3 SDRAM, 4GB eMMC Flash memory, and numerous I/Os. The board targets interactive kiosk, digital signage and HMI (Human Machine Interface) applications running Android or Linux.

While this doesn’t offer a ton of benefits at this point in time, it’s still quite an achievement, and with the passage of time, you can be certain that more smartphones will feature 64-bit processors under the hood.

  • Linux on ARM64-bit ARM based servers should hit the market later this year or earlier in 2015 with SoCs such as Applied Micro X-Gene or AMD Opteron A1100. ARM still has the lead in terms of efficiency with a lower dollar per watt ratio, but Intel is closing in with their new Avoton server-on-chips. However, there’s one aspect where Intel is clearly in the lead: standardization and compatibility.

  • Linux on ARMAround 15 months ago, AMD announced that it would be building 64-bit ARM based SoCs for servers in 2014. Less than a month into 2014, AMD made good on its promise and officially announced the Opteron A1100: a 64-bit ARM Cortex A57 based SoC.

  • Linux on ARMThis new Intrinsic ( Dragonboard uses as Snapdragon 800 processor and has an optional display. The Dragonboard is capable of playing 4k video. The Dragonboard can even run Ubuntu. The dragonboard is already available for a price of 499 USD. INTRINSYC makes both system on module designs for 200 USD as well as development boards.

  • Linux on ARMXMOS is a manufacturer of multicore micro-controller devices. xCORE-eXtended Architecture (the XA Family) combines multicore microcontroller technology with an ultra-low-power ARM® Cortex®-M3 processor, to create the next wave in programmable system-on-chip (SoC) products.

  • Linux on ARMToradex Colibri VF50 and Colibri VF61 are system-on-modules respectively powered by Freescale Vyrbrid VF5xx Cortex A5 SoC and Vybrid VF6xx dual core Cortex A5/M4 SoC, which are part of the company’s Colibri ARM computer on modules.

  • Linux on ARMiWave tipped a Linux-ready Qseven module called the iW-RainboW-G17M-Q7, using Altera’s Cortex-A9/FPGA Cyclone V SX SoC and offering HSMC and PCIe expansion.

  • Linux on ARMBuilding on top of it ARMADA 1500 SoC for Google TV, Marvell has recently announced the ARMADA 1500 Plus (88DE3108) HD secure media processor SoCdesigned for smart video products based on Android 4.2.2, and Linux, such as media players, OTT boxes, hybrid set-top boxes and smart TVs.

  • Linux on ARMCloud Media is mostly known for their Linux based Pop Corn Hour media players. but recently they started offered a free media player called FreeOTT via ISPs or Facebook giveaways. This little box gives direct access to online video channels. I reviewed FreeOTT a few months ago, and found the interface to be sluggish (possibly because of my Internet connection), audio was not working on my TV.

  • Linux on ARMThe Freedreno open-source graphics driver project that's a clean-room reverse-engineered implementation of the Qualcomm Adreno graphics core on the company's ARM SoCs keeps reaching new milestones. While the driver is mostly just worked on by Rob Clark and without any support from Qualcomm, it's quickly becoming the flagship open-source ARM graphics driver for the Linux desktop.

  • Linux on ARMAnichips announced a $59 SBC said to be the first Pico-ITX board based on Allwinner’s dual-core, Cortex-A7 based A20 SoC. The 100 x 72mm, open source, Android- and Linux-ready PhoenixA20 offers multiple display and wireless interfaces, as well as camera and Ethernet ports, and is supported by the same community that backs the company’s Allwinner A10-based SwiftBoard.

  • Linux on ARMFaraday Technology has begun shipping a system-on-chip dev kit aimed at developers of custom SoCs. The “SoCreative! IV” kit’s baseboard is built around Faraday’s A380 SoC, which boasts a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor, a Faraday-developed RISC core, and a high speed expansion bus for interfacing with FPGA daughtercards, and comes with Linux 3.3 and Android 4.x BSPs.

  • Linux on ARMMYIR has released five Linux- and Android-ready computer-on-modules and a common baseboard built around Atmel’s 400MHz, ARM9-based AT91SAM9X5 system-on-chips. The MYC-SAM9X5-V2 series COMs come with five different AT91SAM9X5 SoCs, are offered with optional 7- and 4.3-inch LCD panels, and support -40 to +85°C extended temperature operation.

  • Linux on ARMLinux kernel support for NVIDIA's Tegra 4 ARM platform have been around for nearly one year but only with the Linux 3.13 kernel is this latest-generation high-performance ARM Cortex-A15 based solution going to be supported by the mainline Linux kernel.

  • Linux on ARMAt ARM TechCon, Cavium demonstrated an SDK for its upcoming ARMv8-based Project Thunder SoC family, and announced Ubuntu support for Project Thunder, while Cavium subsidiary MontaVista announced Carrier Grade Linux support for ARMv8. Meanwhile, Cavium and MontaVista joined Linaro and other companies in launching OpenDataPlane, an open source networking SoC interoperability standards organization for Linux.

  • Linux on ARMISEE announced a highly compact single board computer powered by a 2GHz dual-core Cortex-A15 based Texas Instruments OMAP5432 system-on-chip. The IGEPv5 SBC ships with a Yocto-built Linux stack, but also supports Android, and is packed with I/O including five USB ports, mSATA, microSD, HDMI, DisplayPort, audio in/out, gigabit Ethernet, WiFi and Bluetooth wireless, and more.

  • Linux on ARMFor months now there's been an Armada DRM/KMS graphics driver for Marvell Armada ARM SoCs. Having gone through several patch revisions, it appears that all major issues have now been addressed for this nearly 5,000 line open-source driver.
