Linux ARM and Qualcomm

  • Linux on ARMIntrinsyc’s tiny “Open-Q 410″ module has a quad-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A53 Snapdragon 410, offers WiFi, BT, GPS, and 8GB eMMC, and runs both Android and Linux.

  • Linux on ARMThey have enabled the Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8064 (Snapdragon 600) with Linaro's Linaro OpenEmbedded based Ubuntu release. They have optimized it for video/audio capture encode/decode through software based encoding and optimizing HD resolution with hardware acceleration for video-chat.

  • Linux on ARMCompulab Utilite is a family of mini PC based on Freescale i.MX6 processors that can run either Android or Ubuntu, and was launched in 2013.

While many ARM vendors — such as Applied Micro Circuits, Advanced Micro Devices and Cavium — have been pushing this trend, one major ARM manufacturer, Qualcomm with its Snapdragon designs, had stayed out of the server market. Until today.

The Dragonboard can even run Ubuntu. The dragonboard is already available for a price of 499 USD. INTRINSYC makes both system on module designs for 200 USD as well as development boards.

  • Linux on ARMhttp://inforcecomputing.com is an embedded Pico-ITX development kit maker using Qualcomm, here their latest 8064 chip with 2GB RAM in a compact dev board retailing at $149. The boards come with basic connections like micro hdmi, micro sd, and ethernet.

  • Linux on ARMQualcomm developers have posted their new mac80211 driver for the Qualcomm Atheros QCA98xx 802.11ac wireless adapters for use with the Linux kernel.

  • Linux on ARMThe first working ARM System-on-Chip (SoC) GPU graphics driver built for Gallium3D has been merged into mainline Mesa! The driver that was merged into mainline Mesa is the Gallium3D Freedreno for Qualcomm Snapdragon/Adreno graphics hardware. This Freedreno Gallium3D driver initially supports the A220, which is the GPU that Qualcomm uses with its Snapdragon S3 SoC.

  • Linux on ARMBack in April I wrote about an open-source graphics driver for Qualcomm's Snapdragon. This reverse-engineered driver project was actually started by an employee of Texas Instruments -- a competitor to Qualcomm -- but was being done since it was some of the only ARM hardware out there where the developer wasn't tainted by NDAs. Since Phoronix delivered the announcement of this Snapdragon GPU driver, there hasn't been much news to report.

  • Linux on ARMThere is another new open-source Linux graphics driver entering development and it has already showed signs of success with basic 2D acceleration working. This new open-source driver is for Qualcomm's Snapdragon / Adreno and who is leading the development of this driver is also quite interesting.
